Safety Precautions of heating with a Wood Stove or Fireplace

With increased cost in utilities, more home owners may return to using their fireplace or wood stove for additional heating. With this in mind, there are some safety precautions that need to be followed:

 

 

1. Clear the area around the fireplace/wood stove chimney.

2. Always use a fireplace screen or have the wood stove doors closed.

3. Never overload the fireplace/wood stove with too many logs.

4. Keep a fire extinguisher on hand and place smoke detectors throughout the house. 

5. When building a fire, place logs at rear of the fireplace, preferably on the grate.

6. Never leave a fireplace unattended.

7. Keep wood stacked, covered and outside, away from the house or off the ground.

8. Have your fireplace inspected annually and cleaned (Service provided by the Fireplace & Chimney Authority)

9. Choose the right fuel, use seasoned wood and burn smartly

10. Make a fire that fits your fireplace/wood stove

11. Properly dispose of ashes and coal
